This course will address information regarding school-aged children with traumatic brain injury, focusing on TBI as a chronic disease, concussion, pragmatic social language issues, strategic learning and gist. 2015 Awards of Excellence in Brain Injury Rehabilitation

The Ontario Brain Injury Association in collaboration with PIA Law is pleased to announce the 2015 Awards of Excellence in Brain Injury Rehabilitation!

These awards will be presented by the Ontario Brain Injury Association to recipients who have been selected by their peers for providing exceptional service to the brain injury community in the following six categories:

  1. Hospital Social Worker of the Year – This award will be given to the hospital social worker who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty to help brain injury survivors and their families. The recipient will be selected from social workers working at a trauma or rehabilitation hospital in the last year (2014/2015).
  2. Case Manager of the Year – This award will be given to a case manager working in private practice who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty to help catastrophically impaired brain injury survivors and their families. The recipient will be someone who has worked for at least the last year (2014/2015) as a private case manager helping catastrophically impaired brain injury survivors.
  3. Health Care Provider of the Year – This award will be given to the health practitioner who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty to assist the brain injury community. The recipient may be in the public or private sector and can be from any discipline whatsoever (i.e. physician, speech language pathologist, private social worker, occupational therapist, psychologist, physiotherapist, rehabilitation support worker, personal support worker, etc.). The recipient will be someone who consistently goes the extra mile to assist the brain injury community.
  4. Local Brain Injury Association of the Year – This award is meant to recognize the non-profit brain injury association which provides exemplary service to the brain injury community and continues to find innovative means to support brain injury survivors and their families.
  5. Rehabilitation Company of the Year – This award is meant to recognize the private rehabilitation company that consistently provides exceptional and dedicated service to brain injury survivors, including through volunteer work by its personnel.
  6. Insurance Company of the Year (NEW) – This award is meant to recognize the insurance company that consistently acts responsibly and compassionately in assisting brain injury claimants.  The recipient will be a company that provides significant ongoing support to the brain injury community and is dedicated to raising public awareness of brain injury.

The 2015 Awards of Excellence will be presented to the recipients at the Back to School Conference hosted by PIA Law and the Toronto ABI Network on September 10th, 2015 at the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto.

MADD Canada’s National Conference For Victims Of Impaired Driving

Each April, MADD Canada hosts its National Conference for Victims’ of Impaired Driving. Delegates from across Canada come together to share their experiences and honour those who have been killed or injured as a result of impaired driving. Victims/survivors who have lost loved ones or been injured themselves in impaired driving crashes come together to share their experiences.

The member firms of PIA Law will be hosting a workshop on Impaired Driving and Personal Injury Law:  Pursuing Justice for Victims

This workshop will be presented by three experienced personal injury lawyers from PIA Law. The focus will be to provide an explanation of the rights of impaired driving victims (and their families) in the civil law system. Participants will learn about:

  • No-fault benefits available to victims and family members, including strategies to overcome hurdles and obtain the maximum level of benefits and care.
  • Bringing a lawsuit against an impaired driver – understanding the process, what needs to be proven and the evidence necessary to obtain maximum compensation.
  • The legal responsibilities and liability of people who serve alcohol.

PIA takes to the ice for Shoot for a Cure

On April 3, the lawyers of the Personal Injury Alliance took to the ice to support the Canadian Spinal Research Organization’s Shoot for A Cure fundraising campaign. SFAC is a fundraising campaign that aims to reduce the incident of spinal cord injuries and Neurotruama in hockey, as well as to fund research to find a cure for paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries.
